Methanol (CH3OH, aka MeOH) is a volatile, water soluble, colorless, toxic, biodegradable and flammable liquid. It is a large-volume commodity chemical that belongs to the alcohol family of products.

Methanol is an important basic chemical used in the production of a wide range of intermediate and consumer goods via derivative products rather than in direct final usage. It is a very important commodity chemical, entering as raw material the production of several intermediate chemicals as well as used directly in many applications. Today, the majority of methanol is consumed in the chemical and petrochemical industry to produce chemicals, such as formaldehyde and acetic acid, ending up in polymers, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyurethane (PUR). Converting methanol into other basic chemicals (e.g. ethylene, propylene) is also expanding rapidly, reaching more than one third of the global methanol market demand. This integrated methanol-to-olefins (MTO) process is mainly being implemented in China.
